Utility-Scale Solar

Foundation design and structural engineering for MW-scale ground-mount installations.

Utility-Scale Engineering

Utility-scale solar projects cover hundreds to thousands of acres and require tens of thousands of foundation piles. The structural engineering at this scale is focused on foundation design, geotechnical coordination, and ensuring that every pile and tracker system is designed to handle site-specific soil conditions, wind loads, and seismic demands.

Our team provides the structural engineering backbone for ground-mount solar farms, working with developers, EPCs, and tracker manufacturers to deliver stamped foundation designs and structural calculations that keep projects on schedule.

Ground-Mount System Engineering

We work with all major racking and tracker systems.

Single-Axis Trackers

Single-axis trackers are now the dominant technology for utility-scale solar, delivering 15-25% more energy production compared to fixed-tilt systems. Each tracker manufacturer has unique structural and foundation requirements.

We design foundations based on the specific tracker manufacturer's reaction loads, accounting for wind, gravity, and seismic load combinations per ASCE 7. Our designs integrate directly with manufacturer-provided torque tube and drive system specifications.

Fixed-Tilt Systems

Fixed-tilt ground-mount arrays remain a strong choice for community solar projects and sites where tracker systems are not practical. We provide complete structural engineering for fixed-tilt racking, including foundation design, connection details, and code-compliant calculations.

Whether the system uses driven piles, ground screws, or concrete piers, we design the foundation to match your site's soil conditions and loading requirements.

Foundation Design

Designed for your site's specific soil and loading conditions.

Driven Steel Piles

The most common utility-scale foundation type. We design W-section and pipe pile embedments based on geotechnical data and verified through pile load testing programs.

Helical Piles & Ground Screws

Ideal for sites with environmental sensitivity or where driven piles are impractical. We design screw-type foundations with torque-to-capacity correlations matched to your soil profile.

Concrete Piers & Ballasted

For rocky terrain, capped landfills, or brownfield sites where ground penetration is restricted. We design drilled shafts and ballasted foundation systems to meet site constraints.

Geotechnical Coordination & Pile Load Testing

Geotechnical Review

We review soil boring reports, SPT blow counts, and soil classification data to inform foundation design. Our analysis accounts for soil bearing capacity, lateral resistance, corrosivity, and frost depth to produce foundations that perform as designed over the life of the project.

Pile Load Testing Programs

For driven pile projects, we design and oversee pile load testing programs - including axial compression, axial tension (pullout), and lateral load tests - to verify that actual soil capacity matches design assumptions. Test results are used to validate or adjust pile embedment depths before full-scale installation begins.

What We Deliver

Complete structural documentation for utility-scale permitting and construction.

Foundation Design Packages

PE-stamped foundation plans including pile embedment details, anchor bolt layouts, concrete pier designs, and connection specifications. Ready for permitting and construction.

Structural Calculations

Complete structural calculation packages per IBC and ASCE 7, covering wind, gravity, and seismic load combinations. We coordinate directly with tracker manufacturer reaction data to ensure foundation and racking compatibility.
